Together we seek to discover and draw out your inner musician.

Whether you are a beginner or advanced player…

I aim to provide students with a solid foundation in piano technique while developing a rich understanding of music through repertoire, theory, history, and composition in a diversity of styles.

However, if you just want to learn how to play your favorite tunes, I’m onboard for that, too!

Meet your teacher

I’m Marty McGinn. I’ve been playing the piano for over 3 decades and teaching for 2 of those. Through the years I’ve had amazing opportunities with music: recorded and played live with awesome inspiring bands, accompanied countless singers (including my mom!), choirs & instrumentalists, and played for crowds of 2 to hundreds of people (even Kamala Harris once). From organ to harpsichord, electric pianos to synthesizers, I play pretty much anything with a keyboard!

I enjoy having the opportunity to share my love and knowledge of music with children and adults alike!

Welcome to the studio

My studio is located directly across the street from Windom Park in NE Minneapolis. Come inside and take a seat in the enclosed porch (heated through the cold months) during your child’s lesson or, if you have other children with you, spend some time at the playground!

Instruments at the studio: Yamaha M2 Upright Console, Fender Rhodes Mark I Seventy-three, Neupert Harpsichord (generously loaned by Nora Paoli), Johannus Opus 3 digital organ (coming soon!), Kimball Organ

Marty is an excellent teacher. He made piano lessons fun and engaging for my son. My son was previously enrolled in a big music school institution in Minneapolis, but the assigned teacher, while a very talented pianist, was not a good fit for my son as he had to adhere to a rigid curriculum. My son was looking for a non-traditional piano teacher that would expose him to music theory and music composition that were not possible with his previous instructor. Marty was more than open to teaching my son the music he actually wanted to play, which at the end of the day is all that matters because that is what keeps the student involved and persistent with their practice outside of lessons.

Marty always took into account what I wanted to learn. When I wanted to learn more about music theory as a whole he was happy to teach lessons about more than just playing a piece of music. Overall, he is considering and encouraging teacher and I would 100% recommend him!

Marty has been working with our son for over two years, and we are very happy to have him as a piano teacher! Marty has a gentle, friendly demeanor and a very effective approach to instruction. These lessons have helped to deepen our son's love of music, and working with him has been a huge confidence builder. Our son looks forward to their sessions and has come to really adore Marty.

Five Stars; we loved having Marty as our daughter's piano teacher! He was so patient, kind and funny with her. He was punctual in person (when there was such a time) and on Zoom, and she really enjoyed her lessons. He delivered well rounded lessons, a mixture of theory, scales, encouraging her to compose her own songs, and brought her music for songs she wanted to learn. On top of all that he is an amazing pianist, vocalist and organist. We wholeheartedly recommend Marty!

I took Zoom piano lessons with Marty at the beginning of the pandemic. Cooped up in the house, it was a great artistic outlet to improve my craft and challenge myself with a new teacher. Even though we were separated by a computer screen, Marty was able to teach me new techniques and give me confidence to keep playing. Marty is a calm teacher and it's clear he has a great love and respect for music. I highly recommend him!

Mr. McGinn has been teaching our now 9-year old daughter for several years and has helped her blossom into a developing pianist, improviser, and music enthusiast. We appreciate Mr. McGinn's gentle approach, humor, and unending patience as he gives her the tools she needs to advance her skills.

Marty did a great job at coaching my daughter in her passion for music. He was a great coach and teacher, never heavy handed, letting her follow her passion and guiding along the way. Definitely recommend.

Marty has a lovely, gentle manner that my daughter (and dog) immediately trusted. She especially enjoyed ear training exercises and music theory, which Marty made fun and interesting.
